About this break

Gun Point is an exposed reef-and-point break on the Dominican Republic’s Amber Coast, along the surf-rich north coast near Cabarete. The defining wave is a right-hander breaking over reef, with northeast North Atlantic groundswell providing the best setup and southwest winds producing offshore conditions. Surf-Forecast rates Gun Point 3/5 and “fairly consistent,” with winter and spring highlighted as favorable seasons, although its historical clean-wave statistics single out autumn—especially October. Warm tropical water, a more serious reef setup and fewer beginner-oriented features make Gun Point particularly attractive to experienced surfers looking beyond the better-known breaks around Encuentro.

Considerations

Crowds: Moderate

Sea urchins • rocks • coral • sharks • reef exposure • crowds when good. The reef bottom makes positioning and wipeouts more consequential than at a sand-bottom beach break. Conditions are also wind-sensitive: SW winds are offshore, while NE groundswell is the preferred swell direction.
