About this break

Dermaga, also known as The Pier, is a right-hand point/reef break located at the far end of Limestone Bay in the Kertasari surf zone of West Sumbawa.

Unlike the steeper reef waves nearby, Dermaga can produce a softer, longer right with a relatively forgiving wall. When a substantial south-to-southwest swell reaches the coast, the point begins to come alive, producing long rights that can run toward the mangrove forest.

With the right swell and tide, Dermaga can also become faster and more hollow, offering punchy sections and occasional barrels.

Dermaga's biggest advantage is its ability to provide a quality alternative when other Kertasari breaks become overwhelmed by swell.

A solid south-to-southwest swell wraps into the point and produces a right-hander that peels toward the mangrove forest.

The wave can be considerably softer than neighboring reef breaks, providing a long open wall that encourages drawn-out turns and flowing surfing rather than the immediate heavy barrel riding associated with Dirty Hippies.

Under the right conditions, however, Dermaga develops considerably more punch. Larger sets can become fast and hollow, producing barrel sections along the reef.

Considerations

Crowds: Low

Sharp reef, sea urchins, strong currents possible, powerful surf on larger swells, tide sensitive and sharp mangrove roots at the end of the ride. Avoid riding too far into the mangrove forest. Reef booties can be useful. Conditions become substantially more challenging during large swells.
