Surf Beaches

Playa El Palmar – this stretch of coastline is a Panamanian classic that is suitable for every level of surfer. It’s not crowded, but still usually sees a consistent set of surfers. It’s located along a small beach just west of San Carlos.

There are several waves in the out front. The premier wave is a low tide, right point break off a rock shelf. It is for intermediate and advanced surfers. Gentle take off but jacks up as it gets shallower in the inside. There are more beginner/intermediate waves directly in front of Rio Mar at medium to high tides. These are beautiful clear water beach breaks with some nice rolling white water for those that are just starting out.

The waves here can be strong and consistently get up to 8 feet (2.5 m). Playa El Palmar has three breaks (Frente Palmar, Punta Palmar, and Hawaiisito) that offer a nice sampling of waves for all types of surfers. There are both right-hand and left-hand options and the waves are best during medium to high tide. Swells come from the west, southwest, and south.

Hawaiisito in Golfo de Panama is a fairly exposed point break that has fairly consistent surf The best wind direction is from the northwest. Clean groundswells prevail and the ideal swell angle is from the south southwest. Best around mid tide. Rarely crowded here. Hawaiisito or Little Hawaii is one of the 3 breaks at Playa Palmar.  It is a rocky bottom point break on the east side of the beach. A left-hand wave that is really nothing like Hawaii. Hawaiisito is best on a smaller swell at medium to high tide. The Palmar area is a great spot for all surfers of all levels. Hawaiisito Surf Guide
