The Zancudo Lifestyle ~ Costa Rica

zancudo-arial

Hidden away on a sand spit in Costa Rica’s Southern Zone is Playa Zancudo. Home to monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, and a huge variety of exotic birds. Nestled under the trees, alongside the jungle wildlife is the cutest beach community. Playa Zancudo has a great mix of both expats and native-born Costa Rican’s (otherwise known as Tico’s).

Although small in area, this town is large in personality. Visitors and homeowners can choose from a variety of restaurants and bars for dining, dancing, and entertainment. Zancudo has two super mercados to choose from that carry all the day-to-day basics.

Playa Zancudo has a variety of bars and restaurants. If socializing in bars and restaurants isn’t your thing, there is plenty of nature to explore. With the Gulfo Dulce on one side and the Sabalo River on the other, Zancudo is a water lover’s dream.

A kayak trip through the estuary of the Sabalo is visually stunning. Talk about complete immersion into the jungle. The sights, the sounds, the fresh jungle air will all make you think that you have, somehow, traveled into another time.

Being a peninsula, the beaches span the entire length virtually unoccupied. Surfers enoy the Central and Southern end due to the amazing beach break. Swimmers prefer the beaches on the northern tip. The wide-open beach is full of driftwood just waiting to stimulate the imagination with endless DIY projects.

The Gulfo Dulce is home to a variety of water life that’s surrounded by the Osa Peninsula. Covering an area of just 700 square miles on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, the Osa’s geological history makes it home to a nearly unparalleled amount of biodiversity. Fishermen and women from all over the world enjoy fishing and diving in the waters of the gulf.

An hour’s drive from Zancudo will take you to the paved landing strip among a green field of Golfito airport. It may not look like much, but what Golfito Domestic Airport lacks in size, it makes up for in affordability and proximity to the port of Golfito. This is a great resource for travel options while living in Zancudo.

Surfing, SUP, kayaking, fishing, walking, nature adventures, and socializing are the way of life in Zancudo. This hidden gem is still under the radar and that’s the way the locals like it.
